After Indonesia and Sri Lanka, India was the hardest-hit country by the 2004 tsunami. Estimates speak of over 18,000 dead and more than 5,600 missing. In one of the sad statistics, however, India tops the list: over 650,000 people were made homeless when the flood destroyed their homes. Eight years later. In Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, four settlements for tsunami victims have now been built in which refugees from the makeshift camps are living in permanent houses again. The series portrays some of these people in their new homes. The pictures can only suggest their fates‘ gravity and the differences in how they dealt with the losses. One thing becomes clear, however: the tide has long since withdrawn, and yet it is still omnipresent.
